Weary Chuckle #1-#2, 2024
Sculptures (Chair, broches, beekeeper suit, copper bells)

Two sculptures that serve dual purposes as both performance props and standalone sculptural pieces, elongating the recurring theme of safeguarding and vulnerability, and of the barriers we construct around ourselves. Weary Chuckle #2 consists of an armchair adorned with a multitude of brooches: an everyday object, typically associated with relaxation and safety, transformed into a potentially hazardous surface. Our familiarity with brooches gives an immediate bodily response in remembrance of the needle of a brooch, if improperly secured, can unexpectedly pierce the skin. A household object becoming alien, and a discomfort rising from the everyday.

In Weary Chuckle #1, a beekeeper costume covered in cobber bells, this “skin” also serves as both a barrier and a threat, at the same time as drawing a subtle parallel to beehives, nature’s example of a collective. The cluster of bells spreads like a peculiar rash, a reaction of the skin against itself. When used as a prop in the performance, the suit becomes an instrument of sound. As the wearer moves, the bells create a cacophony of tinkling and chiming. This auditory element transforms the visual metaphor of a rash into a sonic experience, suggesting that our inner turmoil and external pressures can manifest in ways that go beyond the visual.ys of being together in a world that often seems designed to keep us apart. What is togetherness? With whom and for whom? What is kinship? And could the fragmented family serve as another model of being together?
